Telefónica designs a management solution for autonomous drone fleets for security

March 2, 2022

The widespread use of 5G is increasingly expanding the possibilities of drones. A good example of this is the recent proposal by Telefónica, which plans to use them as security guards.

State-of-the-art 5G connectivity has been decisive in developing this new use of drones. Not in vain, its ultra-low latency is essential to ensure the rapid response of these devices and the sending of images in real time.

This is Telefónica Drone Protection

Telefónica Ingeniería de Seguridad (TIS) and Unmanned Life have developed a fleet of drones for surveillance and security tasks. This proposal will be one of the most interesting novelties that we can see at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (from February 28 to March 3, 2022).

Telefónica’s proposal is based on the use of autonomous drones equipped with artificial intelligence. They may be centrally controlled to carry out tasks related to surveillance (e.g. maintenance of critical infrastructures, verification of events, etc.).

We have already had the opportunity to see these drones in operation before their official presentation at the Mobile World Congress in 2022. This demonstration took place in Distrito Telefónica (Madrid) and 1.2 m devices were used in it. To carry it out, the corresponding authorizations were obtained from the AESA (State Aviation Safety Agency) due to the fact that said location is very close to airports and heliports.

A pioneering solution in Spain

This technology is intended for companies that either do not have enough guards or wish to employ their staff in other tasks. In fact, Telefónica estimates that your project can save up to 35% on operating costs and provide more efficient time management.

Fabián Blanco (president and CEO of TIS) highlighted the consulting functions that his company will carry out. This is intended to guide customers not only on the operation of these drones but also on regulatory compliance (e.g. in terms of privacy).

The surveillance drones in 5 characteristics

  1. Works on any type of drone. In fact, TIS is already carrying out consultancies to customize the devices that best suit the needs of each client.
  2. The drones have state-of-the-art security systems to guarantee their controlled landing in the event of incidents (e.g. loss of connectivity).
  3. The drones have a range of 45 minutes, with a charging time of only half an hour. The device itself detects when it needs to recharge its battery and automatically goes to the nearest charging station.
  4. Possibility of delimiting predetermined areas for drones to carry out their surveillance tasks.
  5. These devices use artificial intelligence to detect unauthorized persons, being able to retransmit live images. Likewise, they are capable of identifying and neutralizing other aircraft with a distance of 10 and 1.5 km, respectively.

Without a doubt, the use of drones for surveillance that Telefónica has proposed is a solution with enormous potential for all types of sectors. Certainly, this is one of the most promising uses of 5G connectivity. We are sure that your presentation at the next Barcelona MWC will be a complete success.
